Description

Bring the web to your personal knowledge base. Save content to your Obsidian vault so you always have access to it, even offline. Obsidian is secure, private, and designed around durable open formats that allows you to preserve your data for the long term.

Whether you're researching for a project, saving recipes, bookmarking travel destinations, or collecting inspiring articles, the Obsidian Web Clipper helps you organize your ideas.

- Clip anything: From news articles and blog posts to recipes, product pages, and research papers — if it's on the web, you can save it.
- Select page content: Clip entire pages, selected text, or let the clipper intelligently extract just the main content.
- Customizable templates: Create tailored templates to automatically extract metadata from web pages. Perfect for academics, movie buffs, book lovers, or anyone who wants structured notes.
- Smart triggers: Set up rules to automatically apply the right template based on the website you're clipping from.
- Seamless integration: all your clips flow directly into Obsidian, in the vault and folder of your choice.

As with everything Obsidian, Web Clipper is designed to protect your privacy, and give you control over your data.

- No lock-in: All your clips are saved in clean, durable, portable Markdown files — no proprietary formats.
- Offline access: your saved clips are saved locally, and always at your fingertips, with or without an internet connection.
- 100% private: all your clipped content is stored locally in your Obsidian vault. Your thoughts are yours.

Obsidian helps you create connections and links between your notes so you can organize your thoughts. You can create links between everything — ideas, articles, lists, locations, books — anything you can put in a note, you can link to other notes.

A digital hoarders dream

As if I needed another insanely powerful tool to play with and optimize 🤣.

Jokes aside, this tool is awesome, and makes the act of sharing content to obsidian exponentially easier, especially on iOS.

Without any configuration, web clipper does exactly what it is supposed to — save things from the web to your vault quickly.

However, with a bit of effort, the tool becomes exponentially more powerful since you can have customer templates to match the different types of web content you save.

Make sure you check out the helpful example web clipper templates repo — the examples are useful and can be imported quickly and easily.

Worst web extension I’ve ever used.

Can the developers explain to me why this web clipping extension was implemented instead of using the share feature that every other similarly functioning web clipping service like Pocket or Instapaper uses? Also why must I click 4 authorizations to accomplish what should require only one click, and it only actually import the content half the time?

Developer Response ,

Hi Matt. This is @kepano — I am the sole developer of this extension.

Share sheets and Safari extensions work very differently. Web Clipper is not an exact replacement for Pocket or Instapaper which rely on centralized servers to parse pages. Web Clipper runs locally on your phone, and works directly with the browser DOM. This makes it capable of powerful workflows such as separate templates per website, extracting specific data from HTML selectors and running the Interpreter feature. However Safari extensions come with some limitations. You can give Web Clipper permissions in Safari settings that will make clipping smoother. Share sheets don't have access to the browser DOM, and therefore require a server connection to send the web page to a read-it-later service. Obsidian doesn't offer a read-it-later service, but there are Obsidian plugins for apps like Instapaper and Readwise that might fit the bill.
